Stolperstein-Laying Ceremony for Mr. and Mrs. Wittal

By installing Stolpersteine, also known as “stumbling stones,” in locations where the inhabitants never returned to after the war, we will honor the Wittals family and commemorate them within the city of Brno.
At the age of twenty-six, Johann Wittal founded the company Wittal Brüder together with his brother Adolf. The company specialized in the production of aprons and later expanded to include other textile garments. In 1904, Johann married Friederike Bass, who came from Boskovice, and together they had a daughter named Valerie. In the early 1930s, the Wittals asked the architect Heinrich Blum to design a family villa for them in Hroznová Street, near Villa Stiassni and Villa Münz. Unfortunately, the Wittals’ time in their newly built house was cut short. In 1939, due to their Jewish heritage, their family business and the villa were subjected to Aryanization and Johann and Friederike were deported to Theresienstadt in 1942, where Johann died. A few months later, Friederike was murdered in Treblinka.
